01The challenge
Hansa Backhaus bakes through the night and delivers from 04:00. Its first electric vans arrived before anyone had worked out where 24 of them would charge, and the ovens already used most of the grid connection during the night.
02What we built
We installed solar on both wings of the plant and a depot of 24 chargers with load management. The ovens always come first; the chargers share what is left and fill each van by its departure time. Daytime top-ups for returning vans run on the roof.
03The result
All 24 vans leave charged every morning and the connection was never upgraded. The roof makes 1,008 MWh a year, 85% of it used on site by ovens, cooling and vans.
How the project ran
Fleet study
June 2023
Routes, mileage and dwell times for every van, with the oven schedule overlaid.
Design
July to September 2023
Charger layout in the yard, solar on both wings and a load plan that puts the ovens first.
Installation
October 2023 to March 2024
Yard groundworks in two halves so the vans kept moving.
Support
From April 2024
Driver cards, a charging helpline and monthly cost reports for each route.
We expected to need a bigger grid connection. We needed a better plan for the one we had.
Site assessment
A site like Hansa Backhaus's? Let us look at yours.
An engineer reviews your meter data and roof, visits the site and sends a written proposal with a design, a yield model and the financing options that fit. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
